The Blood on the Ice quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is renowned as one of the most intriguing yet notoriously complex murder mysteries in the game. Taking place in the frozen city of Windhelm, players are tasked with investigating a series of gruesome killings attributed to a mysterious killer known as the Butcher. Successfully solving this case requires careful investigation, speaking with key witnesses, and accurately identifying crucial evidence scattered around the city.
Beginning the Investigation in Windhelm
To trigger the quest, players must enter Windhelm multiple times until a crime scene appears late at night in the city graveyard. Upon arriving, you will find a guard standing over a fresh victim surrounded by concerned onlookers. Speaking to the guard allows you to offer your assistance in gathering evidence and questioning witnesses around the crime scene.
After receiving permission from Jorleif in the Palace of the Kings, you must return to interview the three witnesses nearby. Each witness provides unique perspectives, though none can directly identify the culprit responsible for the crime. Once you have finished questioning everyone, reporting your findings to the guard will advance the investigation to the next stage.
Following Blood Trails and Searching Hjerim
The crime scene features a trail of blood leading away from the graveyard toward an abandoned house named Hjerim. To gain entry, you can either pick the master-level lock or obtain the key from Tova Shatter-Shield. Inside Hjerim, searching through the cluttered rooms reveals key items including suspicious journals and a strange amulet hidden behind a false back cabinet.
Investigating the hidden altar behind the cabinet unveils the sinister nature of the killer's rituals. Taking the Beware the Butcher flyers and the strange amulet is essential for gathering enough proof. These items serve as critical evidence that must be shown to experts in Windhelm to uncover their true origin and purpose.
Identifying Suspects and Avoiding False Accusations
With evidence in hand, speaking to Viola Giordano will point suspicions toward Wuunferth the Unliving, the court wizard residing in the Palace of the Kings. However, reporting Wuunferth immediately to Jorleif leads to an wrongful arrest and leaves the true killer free to strike again. To avoid this outcome, players should confront Wuunferth directly about the necromantic amulet found in the abandoned house.
Wuunferth denies involvement and explains the amulet's magical properties while predicting when the real killer will strike next. He instructs you to patrol the Stone Quarter at night to catch the killer in the act. Taking this extra step ensures that the innocent wizard is spared from prison while setting up the final confrontation.
Catching the Real Butcher in the Market
Patrolling the Stone Quarter market during the night reveals Calixto Corrium stalking his next intended victim. Intervening before Calixto can attack saves the target and forces the murderer to flee toward Hjerim or attack you directly. Defeating Calixto ends the terror looming over Windhelm and yields valuable unique loot from his body.
After eliminating the true killer, return to Jorleif to report the resolution of the case and receive your reward. Completing this quest restores peace to Windhelm and unlocks the opportunity to purchase Hjerim as a personal house for your character.
